Our First Cashmere Goat Milk Lotion
Lotion is one of the simplest, quickest products one can make with goat milk. Unlike milk products such as cheese or yogurt, you don’t need a lot of milk to get started. Just a few ounces of goat milk is enough to make a personal bottle of moisturizing goat milk lotion.
This weekend, my kids and I finally got to use some milk from our cashmere goats. Long story short, one of our does gave birth and the baby didn’t make it. The doe is in good health but her udder was full, so we milked her. After saving her colostrum for future emergencies, we took some 8 ounces of milk for lotion making.
While most goat milk recipes use a fraction of goat milk mixed with water, we chose to use 100% goat milk. We felt this would make our lotion richer and thicker—and it did.
All in, the lotion we made had few ingredients: raw goat milk, coconut oil, wax, a bit of lemograss essential oil for scent, and a natural preservative called optiphen Plus.
The making process took 20 minutes ( not counting the time to milk our goat). We let the lotion cool for 30 minutes, bottled it, and then tested it. It was nice and did the job of moisturizing my dry skin! I do think the lotion was a bit waxy so next time I will use less wax.
There are so many ways to make a goat milk lotion, it can be overwhelming to start. Through some trial and error, we hope to arrive at the perfect lotion for us.
